When nothing happens

You tried a practice, and… not much. No clear picture, no strong feeling, maybe a wandering mind. That's not failure — and this page explains why.

First, the reassurance

You're not doing it wrong

Guided imagery isn't a switch that either works or doesn't. It's more like weather — some days are vivid, some are grey, and both are normal. A quiet, uneventful session is still a real session. You sat, you breathed, you gave yourself a calm quarter of an hour. That counts.

The value was never only in the pictures. Much of what helps is the slow breath, the calm attention, and the gentle intention — and those happen whether or not anything appears in your mind.

And if imagery simply isn't for you — that's okay too. It doesn't suit everyone, and it's only ever one small, optional companion to your care. You've lost nothing by finding that out.
